What would you dream about if you knew you couldn’t fail?

It sounds like a simple question. It isn’t.

When I ask people to dream, something interesting often happens. Before the dream has a chance to fully form, another voice jumps in:

Be realistic. That’s too big. What if it doesn’t work? Who do you think you are?

That’s the inner critic talking. And this month, as we walk through Chapter 2 of Envision Your Extraordinary Life, I’d like to help you turn down its volume long enough to hear what your heart has been trying to tell you.

Your Dreams Are Ideas for Your Future

A dream often begins as a whisper. I would love to write a book. I want work that feels meaningful. I want to travel more. I want deeper relationships. I want to become healthier, happier, and more fully myself.

A dream is not a commitment. It is not a deadline. It does not need a strategic plan, a budget, or anyone else’s approval.

A dream is a possibility.

When we allow ourselves to dream, we add color, texture, energy, and direction to the vision we began creating in Chapter 1. And this is true no matter your age or stage. Whether you are building a career or have just retired from one, there is still a dream with your name on it.

Take Off the Judge’s Robe

In Chapter 2, I encourage readers to temporarily take off the judge’s robe.

My own inner critic has plenty of opinions. It likes to tell me to be practical, that an idea is too big, that people may not understand. Over the years, I have learned to respond: “Thank you for the information. Now go away.”

The inner critic is loud, persistent, and demanding. Intuition is different. It tends to be quiet, patient, and gentle. The challenge is learning which voice deserves our attention.

Your inner critic may be trying to protect you from embarrassment or disappointment. But if you allow it to make every decision, it may also protect you from growth, joy, discovery, and success. You can acknowledge fear without letting it lead.

There Is Enough

There is a second voice that shrinks our dreams, and it is often harder to hear because it has been with us so long. It is the voice of scarcity.

For many of us, it began with everyday messages: Money doesn’t grow on trees. Don’t ask for too much. Be satisfied with what you have. Someone else needs it more. Over time, those messages can become a quiet belief: there isn’t enough, and perhaps I don’t deserve more.

I have learned to question that story. Love grows when we share it. Ideas expand when we exchange them. Another person’s success does not take success away from me. Their courage can remind me of what is possible.

There is room for your contribution. There is room for your voice. There is room for your extraordinary life.

Perhaps abundance begins when we stop asking, “Who am I to want this?” and start asking, “How might this dream also bless others?”

Your Dream Pass

So let’s have a little fun. Consider this your official Dream Pass. For the next five minutes, you are excused from being sensible. No spreadsheets. No five-year feasibility studies. No asking your inner critic for permission.

Set a timer and start writing:

  • Places I want to experience
  • Things I want to learn
  • People I’d love to meet
  • Adventures I’d love to have
  • Contributions I’d love to make
  • The person I’d love to become

Here’s the only rule: you don’t get to explain why something won’t work. Not today. Today we’re dreaming. Next week, we’ll talk about writing it all down.

Try This Week: Journey into the Future

If your mind feels too busy to dream, a few quiet minutes can help. In Chapter 2, I share a guided imagery called Journey into the Future. It gives your inner critic a chance to rest and invites the creative, intuitive part of you to speak.

Listen to Journey into the Future

Afterward, finish this sentence in your journal: If I knew I couldn’t fail, I would ________.
