Sometimes the vision grabs you. It is that incessant idea that begs for attention or the still small voice of wisdom within. Sometimes, an event might trigger your vision. During a middle school retreat, Kenneth dreamed of being a missionary in Mexico and went on to study Spanish and start an orphanage benefiting hundreds of children. Often when we are young, we have a dream of what we want our lives to become. As a child, my friend Liza dreamed of being a writer. She had her little desk and chair and made small booklets with stories. Through the power of guided imagery, Liza remembered these dreams. She went on to publish three books and to inspire many.
A vision is a picture in your mind. Your vision of your future comes from your dreams when your mind is free from doubt or worry; driven by people, places, things, and events that inspire you. It is important to continually generate dreams for all areas of your life, including mental and physical health, family, friends, finances, career, and spirituality. Identify who you want to become, where you want to go, and what interests and ideas you have for all areas of your life. After I lead you through a brief exercise in which you will be free to dream, you will write them down without thinking about whether they are possible. Simply put, do not judge your dreams. Anything is possible! What if you cannot come up with anything or the idea of a vision is overwhelming? Just make something up! An ideal personal vision is vivid, specific, challenging, and is as far as you can see into the distant future.
My first time creating a vision occurred on a beautiful day with the one I loved. I sat with my future husband Bill on the dock at my grandparents’ lakeside home on a glorious summer day. It was one of those days when anything seemed possible, and we shared our dreams. I would be a consultant to businesses and help women to improve their lives; he would stay home with our beautiful, smart children. At 23, Bill was the Renaissance man: a fabulous cook, knowledgeable about politics, history, culture, arts, and science; a great sense of humor with a winning, outgoing personality. He makes everyone he meets feel comfortable and like themselves better. We would buy an old house and fix it up—notwithstanding that we didn’t even own a hammer, much less know the difference between sheetrock and joint compound. We would travel the world and all who entered our home would feel the love and joy. Bill had recently graduated with a degree in Asian Studies and Anthropology, and I would graduate with a bachelor’s in social Welfare as soon as I finished a single gym credit. Bill was in the restaurant business, and I was doing direct care with developmentally disabled adults in community residences. Little did we know that all this and more would come to pass.
